Event: Islamophobia Awareness Month

Date

Islamophobia and Emancipation

Location, Time and date: Room 6 Leeds University Union, 2-4pm, 6th November 2023

In this symposium, Prof. Salman Sayyid, AbdoolKarim Vakil and Dr. Kawter Najib will discuss Islamophobia and emancipation, showing how Islamophobia shackles the figure of the Muslim and giving some pointers to their emancipation. They will bring this into conversation with debates around the definition of Islamophobia and the rise of the concept of “anti-Muslim hatred” as a replacement for Islamophobia.

The presentations will be followed by questions from the host/discussant based on the presentations given. This will lead into a Q&A from the floor.

The event will take place during Islamophobia Awareness Month. Given both on going debates around the concept of Islamophobia and its definition and the sharp rise in Islamophobia in the past few weeks this event is well placed to provide conceptual clarification as to what Islamophobia is and how to combat it.
